ASUS R1F

There are a lot of good things about the R1F, because it really is great - it's a quality machine inside and out. So only mention the cons - the scratches on the tablet pen (because of the pen-slot not being smooth on the inside), the plastic notebook casing (wish it was metal!), and the non-airbag fitted hard drive (such as the IBM X-tablet).

Other than that, if you want the best tablet PC cheaper than other like brands, the R1F is the cream of the crop. The Fujitsu T4210 has a smaller screen, doesn't have a sharp design and is more expensive, and the Toshiba R25 looks boring, is heavy and looks boring.

ASUS R1F can be proudly named Ms Universe of tablet PCs, at least for now.

Faye Wong (王菲/王靖雯)

"I am very lazy, persist to jog for three or two days only; I smoke, harm health and bad habbit; I always like to offend people; I have bad temper, I don't know how to control my emotion; I don't have passion, especially to those that I am not interested; I am self-confidence and self-consciousness, I am confused; Facing the fans, I always thinks awkwardly; I am too negative; I am not obedient.

I am not an idol, don't worship me.

Thanks to those who like my songs, and help me before. Thanks to those who work together with me. Thanks to those who love me.

Wish to achieve the perfection one day, and you will be proud of me."

Eric So

If you're a serious toy collector then you'll either have a couple of Eric So figures in your collection, or you'll be dreaming of having some. Eric So, together with Michael Lau, made the world sit up and take notice of Hong Kong's ability to compete head on with Japan's massive toy figure industry. Eric carved a unique niche for himself with his meticulous studies of Hong Kong's other great export, Bruce Lee, collaborations with fashion companies such as SSUR, Devilock and Vicky Lam's Real Clothing Brand, and his Estate set of figures, based on the Hong Kong of his youth. Full of humour and attention to detail, Eric's work is now some of the most highly sought after in the world.

Eric:"I don't think anyone would have guessed how boring and relentless my work can be. Many people think that being a designer is a glamourous job, but I can assure you it's not. My daily routine is to stay at home, speak to my suppliers, go to meetings, go back and carry on working. It is hard working as a one-man band. I do absolutely everything myself: from design, quality control, marketing and promotion, to going to the bank, posting letters even buying my own lunch! So I guess minus all the chores, my work, designing is definitely fun."

MySims (ぼくとシムのまち)

MySims
is a forthcoming video game developed by EA Games for Nintendo's Wii and DS consoles and based on Maxis' The Sims series. MySims will be released in the Summer of 2007, according to a recent EGM issue.

Wii MySims gameplay revolves around players fixing up a house in their grandparents' rundown town where only a few residents live. The mayor also gives you the opportunity to lure new residents to the town. It is also revealed that "miserable" residents who don't like the player's town will migrate to a volcanic game location.

In contrast, the DS version takes place in a vacation resort with the player tasked with the job to lure in tourists.

Compared to previous Sims titles, MySims has a more cartoonish and anime-inspired look, with chibified character designs. They are modeled after the popular Japanese dolls Pinky Street.

Beatboxing (口技)

Beatboxing is the vocal percussion of hip hop culture and music. It is primarily concerned with the art of reproducing drum sounds using one's voice, mouth, and nasal cavity. It can also involve singing, vocal imitation of turntable scratching, the simulation of horns, strings, and other musical instruments, and the replication of a vast array of sound effects.

The term beatboxing most likely refers to early drum machines which came with pre-programmed musical patterns.

Tsai Ming-Liang (蔡明亮)

Tsai Ming-Liang is a Chinese born in Malaysia, and lived there "in a very simple small village", Kuching, for 20 years after which he moved to Taipei. This, he says, had "a huge impact on his mind and psyche", perhaps later mirrored in his films. "Even today," says Tsai, "I feel I belong neither to Taiwan nor to Malaysia. In a sense, I can go anywhere I want and fit in, but I never feel that sense of belonging." He graduated from the Drama and Cinema Department of the Chinese Cultural University of Taiwan in 1982 and worked as a theatrical producer, screenwriter and television director in Hong Kong.

Tsai's honours include a Golden Lion (best picture) for Vive L'Amour at the Venice Film Festival in 1994, the Silver Bear/Special Jury Prize for The River at the 1997 Berlin International Film Festival, the FIPRESCI award for The Hole at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival and the Alfred Bauer Award and Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Achievement for The Wayward Cloud at the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival.

The Malaysian Censorship Board on 4th March 2007 decided to ban Tsai's latest film shot in Malaysia, "I don't want to sleep alone" based on 18 counts of incidences shown in the film depicting the country "in a bad light" for cultural, ethical and racial reasons.

Yoshitomo Nara (奈良美智)

Yoshitomo Nara first came to the fore of the art world during Japan’s Pop art movement in the 1990s. The subject matter of his sculptures and paintings is deceptively simple: most works depict one seemingly innocuous subject (often pastel-hued children and animals drawn with confident, cartoonish lines) with little or no background. But these children, who appear at first to be cute and even vulnerable, sometimes brandish weapons like knives and saws. Their wide eyes often hold accusatory looks that could be sleepy-eyed irritation at being awoken from a nap—or that could be undiluted expressions of hate.

Nara, however, does not see his weapon-wielding subjects as aggressors. "Look at them, they are so small, like toys. Do you think they could fight with those?" he says. "I don’t think so. Rather, I kind of see the children among other, bigger, bad people all around them, who are holding bigger knives..."

Nara’s own explanation of his work, then, casts us as the aggressors guilty of betraying and attacking childhood innocence. When cast in that light, Nara incriminates himself as well, for his art is above all based upon the perversion of otherwise innocent subjects.
